How do contemporary artists answer a pioneer’s call for innovation? Curated by veteran curator Leung Siu-kee, Eric, “Spirit in Flux” brings together the latest works by eleven artists from Hong Kong and Mainland China. Through ink, ceramics, light installations, and new media, they carry forward the boundary-breaking spirit of Lui Shou-kwan, trailblazer of the “Hong Kong New Ink Movement,” forging artistic conceptions for our times.

WHY IT MATTERS

“Spirit in Flux” embodies Lui Shou-kwan’s revolutionary ethos that artistic expression needs no orthodox lineage but contains its own boundless universe. Through diverse creations by eleven artists, the exhibition reveals explorations that break traditional frameworks while deepening personal styles. Spanning ink paintings, oil works, mixed media, ceramics, paper sculptures, light installations, and new media, it investigates contemporary artistic conception through richly varied forms. Just as Lui Shou-kwan forged a unique visual language merging Eastern philosophy with Western abstraction, participating artists pioneer innovative paths, infusing traditional ink aesthetics with fresh interpretations. The exhibition resonates with Lui Shou-kwan’s landmark solo show currently at Alisan Fine Arts’ Central space, creating cross-temporal artistic dialogue.

Pixels and Zen

Heung Kin-fung’s “Seeing Mountains as Mountains III” transforms hand-painted blocks into nature’s pixels, juxtaposed with printed figurative mountains, exploring the fusion of realism and abstraction. Miao Hanwen’s “Powder Ink Flowing Light” series reconstructs landscapes through design elements of points, lines, and planes, creating geometric abstract vocabulary in ink. Tang Kai-yiu’s “Withered Wood” series renders trees with bold yet delicate strokes, while background mountain scenes respond to Lui Shou-kwan’s abstract, expansive brushwork in Zen painting. Three artists unlock multiple possibilities for traditional landscape aesthetics through distinctly contemporary approaches.

Everyday Poetry

Kong Chun-nga’s “Giddy with Excitement” captures a magical moment when a bird by the window encounters the returning homeowner, interpreting contemporary life’s artistic conception through surreal techniques. Au Hoi-lam and Fung Hoi-shan each elevate daily experiences into imaginative visual narratives through unique perspectives, allowing ordinary objects to radiate poetic brilliance.

Rhythms and Illuminations in 3D

Fan Yan’s “F sharp minor” transcends delicate abstract painting to become paper sculpture dancing to unheard melodies, transforming musical rhythm into elegant three-dimensional gestures. Li Tingting’s “Dwelling in Clouds and Embroidered Shadows” ingeniously embeds carved wooden birds and flowers into boxes painted with foliage, organically fusing flatness with dimensionality. Mok Kai-ching reshapes Hong Kong’s mountain ridges through 3D-printed ceramics, lending landscapes modern technological textures. Tse Chun-sing’s installation simulates blossoming plum flowers using micro-displays and AI animation, interweaving nature with technology. Yuen Ka-yi gathers everyday objects, projecting flowing landscape illusions through rotating light-and-shadow devices.
